I have been playing with tagging massive amounts of photos and importing them into Gallery. Gallery has a new keywords album feature that auto extracts the IPTC keyword data and then provides dynamic albums based on the keywords. It is unfortunately still somewhat of an afterthought, without a dedicated tagging system or UI, but it works so far, and it makes handling those huge collections far easier.

Next step is geotagging everything at the same time, and making a workflow and script to speed things up even more.
